Phillips awaits talks on Liverpool’s future following Konate signing
The 24-year-old admits he hasn’t spoken to Jurgen Klopp about his plans for the coming year
Nat Phillips admits his future at Liverpool is uncertain following Ibrahima Konate’s arrival at the club from RB Leipzig.
Phillips played for the Reds following a central defensive injury crisis that ruled out Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip for much of last season.
Despite the defender’s best efforts, Liverpool have decided to sign Konate for £ 36million from Leipzig and, with the competition for places expected to be intense, Phillips admits his future at Anfield is on the line.
What did he say?
Speaking to Echo of Liverpool, he said: “I think the situation is that at the start, they did not expect me to have the season and to perform the performances that I did.
“Maybe they would’ve thought I was just going to do a job and then they could sell me and move on, now they’re in doubt. I’m not sure.
“I still need to have conversations with them and see if there is a role for me there and what role they would like me to play.
“It would depend if they saw a role for me at Liverpool and then what role it would be. I would have to decide what is best for me from that.
“I have loved all of my time at Liverpool up to this point, having been so taken by the fans this year and loved having the opportunity to play for the club.
“I loved every minute of it and would love to continue playing for the club. But I also have to take into consideration what is best for my career, and that will depend on what role Liverpool see they play or not. have not for me and I will have to go from there.
Phillips on the Konate competition
The 24-year-old is up to the challenge of fighting for his place.
” It is not a surprise [to see Konate signed]. Liverpool are a big club and there will always be huge competition for places. You always have to compete for your place in the team, â€he said.
“Even though there is a lot of competition, I see him as another person to try to learn with. A new person’s game that I can see up close, see how they play, and see if I can get anything out of it.
“You want to play as much as possible, but you have to earn it. There are times you go there by default due to injury, but they don’t come very often.
“If you want to play as often as possible, you have to embrace this fight and play at a level high enough to withstand such competition. “
Phillips on failed move from Stuttgart
Meanwhile, Phillips admitted he was even surprised to be at Liverpool last season, having expected to move to Stuttgart, where he spent 2019-20 on loan.
“All the staff knew the move was supposed to take place,†he said. “I didn’t feel like this wouldn’t happen. It seemed almost over, but as the day progressed I thought to myself, “Oh, okay, maybe this won’t turn out the way we all imagined this morning.”
“Come in the evening, once my suitcases were ready, I was not going to go back to live with my parents anymore because I had just returned from Germany so I went to look for an apartment and it was the process that allowed me to move. . home again.
